What patient condition would NOT be suitable for NIV?

Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is most effective in treating patients who are able to cooperate and follow instructions during the process. An uncooperative patient poses a significant challenge to the successful application of NIV, as it relies on patient engagement for proper mask fitting, breath synchronization, and adherence to treatment protocols.

An uncooperative individual may struggle to stay still, may not be able to follow prompts, or may refuse treatment altogether, all of which can lead to inadequate ventilation and potentially compromise respiratory support. In contrast, patients with minor respiratory issues, well-controlled respiratory conditions, or a stable mental state are typically more suitable candidates for NIV, as they can often understand and comply with the requirements necessary for effective treatment.
